There are two types of heat exchangers that can be installed, the primary heat exchanger and the secondary heat exchanger. The primary is present in almost all boilers and uses heat from the burner to raise the temperature of water within the system. The secondary heat exchanger is only required in a combi boiler and allows the heat to be transferred between two closed systems. The Primary Heat exchanger is sometimes referred to as the ‘main’ heat exchanger or heat engine. The secondary heat exchanger can also
be known as the domestic hot water heat exchanger or the plate heat exchanger.
