The purpose of a baffle in an oil boiler is to slow the flue gases’ escape, it is these gases that heat the boiler water, so the more heat that can be taken out of these gasses the more efficient your boiler becomes. This is why baffles should be replaced or rotated (where possible) once they start to deteriorate.
